Being a good teacher is something I dream of. I am not yet a teacher but I am hoping to be one in a few years. I am very dedicated to my goal and have observed many of my teachers over the years and have seen the traits that I believe will make me a good teacher someday.

One of the most important things for a teacher is knowledge. A good teacher must be very knowledgeable in the subject that they teach or be able to quickly resolve things that they may not know. I have had many teachers who did not memorize certain things, but they knew instantly who to refer me to for clarification. I have also had teachers who weren’t clear on things and just simply referred me to the book or told me not to worry about that detail of topic. No one should ever expect a teacher to completely memorize everything in the discipline that they teach, however being resourceful enough to help their students find answers is a good quality.

Another important thing for a good teacher is the ability to understand where their students are coming from. Going to an urban school is one particular situation that I know must be hard for a new teacher, especially if they aren’t from an urban area themselves. They may be accustomed to everyone having a standard nuclear family in their house, expect that education is easily placed as a high priority, and expect that the student can always and will always go straight home and study diligently. The sad truth is this doesn’t apply to everyone in every situation, and a teacher must take such things into consideration with their planning.

Along with understanding where their students come from, they should be able to teach in an interesting manner. Teachers need to be able to properly relay the information to the students in a way that makes it interesting for them. In this age, it is not enough to just assign problems and give lecture, but teachers must be innovative and creative when creating their lessons in order to engage the class. These lessons could include games and projects that will make it more fun to learn the material.

While the most important thing is the ability to educate, there is some importance in discipline. A good teacher must be able to control the behavior in their class. Simultaneously, the teacher must realize that they will likely not get a group of students that will remain silent during the entire class period. Avoiding serious distractions is the main thing that a teacher should do in terms of discipline. Additional tasks should include mediating disputes and creating classroom policies that make things work well for both the teacher and the students.

Teaching is an important job and there is a lot more to it than people may think. Listed above is only a comprehensive list of things that a good teacher should do, but an excellent teacher has their own list of high standards that they comply with. One day, people will be able to realize that it is an important career and that it takes a lot more effort than to just stand in front of a class and talk.
